Ezekiel "Zeke" Sáenz, also known as the Black Diamond, is a member of Jaxon Hall's clairvoyant gang, the Seven Seals. He is an unreadable, a rare type of clairvoyant. He is the older half-sibling of Nadine Arnett.

Biography[]

History[]

Little is known of Zeke's life prior to joining the Seven Seals. He was born in Oaxaca, Mexico. He lived in multiple cities, but at some point moved away to live with his half-sister Nadine in the United States. In 2057, he traveled to the Scion Citadel of London with her on a college trip to find out more about the Scion system. After the pair were approached by Jaxon Hall, they elected to remain in the citadel to learn more about their clairvoyance. It is heavily implied that Jaxon used false promises to get Nadine and Zeke to stay in Seven Dials. Before becoming an unreadable, Zeke was a fury.

The Bone Season[]

Zeke is in many of Paige Mahoney's flashbacks during her time imprisoned in Sheol I. For example, she recalls when Zeke asked her to sing the song An Ember Morning after learning Paige was Irish. In another flashback, Paige recalls how Jaxon doesn't show any particular concern for Zeke's mental well-being. He experiments on Zeke by making the others attack his unreadable dreamscape.

Zeke, along with the rest of the gang, successfully infiltrate Sheol I to rescue Paige during the Bicentennial Ceremony. He boards a train car with Nadine, Jaxon, Nick, Paige, and the escaping prisoners back to London.

The Mime Order[]

Zeke agrees with Paige that they need to do something about the Rephaim.

After Paige leaves the black market, Nadine and Zeke remain to continue trying to sell their wares for Jaxon. Haymarket Hectorand his gang arrive incredibly drunk. He starts asking Nadine and Zeke questions about the paintings they are selling. They argue with four different traders about whether the paintings are fakes. To please the traders, Hector confiscates the Champaign painting to have it examined. He also takes the rest of their wares. Nadine and Zeke try to stop them, but it is nine against two and they end up getting beaten up. Upon arriving back at the den, Nadine and Eliza Renton begin fighting about what happened. Paige hears and joins in the argument, while Zeke watches on nervously. In the midst of the fighting, Eliza reveals that Nadine is only in the Seals because of Zeke, and that Jaxon didn't want to hire her. Jaxon interrupts them and threatens to kick Eliza out of the Seals.

After the scrimmage, Zeke and Nadine remain loyal to Jaxon.

The Song Rising[]

Nadine and Zeke have been staying low in Seven Dials. However, Terebell Sheratan wants them gone because they are still loyal to Jaxon. Jaxon ends up helping them get out of London safely.

The Mask Falling[]

It's revealed that Nadine and Zeke have been betrayed by Jaxon, who sells them on the gray market. They are arrested in Seven Dials on November 30, 2059. They are sent to Sheol II. Nadine, Zeke, and the other voyants in Sheol II are rescued by Paige and Warden who infiltrate Sheol II with the goal of destroying it. They are being assisted by some of the perdues, or gang members, of Le Vieux Orphelin.

After Arcturus's supposed betrayal, Paige sends Nadine, Zeke, and Ivy back to London to warn the Mime Order, let the Edinburgh and Manchester syndicates know what's happened, and move the London voyants to the shadow houses. Paige also gives Nadine and Zeke the money from the Ranthen they had given to Warden to bring to Paris. Finally, Paige tells them that Eliza and Glym need to make it their priority to destroy the Senshield scanners. When Zeke asks if they should tell the Ranthen about Warden, Paige says yes. Nadine and Zeke say goodbye to Paige, and they part as friends. Nadine and Zeke are now members of the Mime Order and they plan to smuggle themselves to the free-world and tell the truth about Scion.

Physical Description[]

Zeke is slim, with brittle wrists, thin arms, and tanned skin. He has eyes the color of black tea and a thin, restive face. Above his brow there is a vertical scar. He has a freckle under his left eye. He has elegant hands.

Personality[]

Zeke has a bit of an anxious disposition. Paige describes Zeke's dreamscape as interesting, and having a dark, heavy presence in the æther. Zeke and Paige have never been close, but they get along alright. He can be ambitious in his thinking at times. He wants to fight the Rephaim, but he won't go against Nadine as he loves her too much.
