David Fitton is an oracle clairvoyant brought to Sheol I during Bone Season XX.

Biography[]

History[]

David's real name is Cadoc Fitzours, or Cade for short. He was born in Île-d’Arz, Brittany. His family died in a house fire, and he was the only survivor. He was homeless for a while before getting a job at the Port of Lorient. Another dockworker guessed what he was and reported him. He spent almost three years in the Bastille before he "won" the blood lottery. The night before his execution he was brought to the L’Hôtel Garuche where he met Luce Ménard Frère. Frère explained that they needed an exceptionally rare voyant to work for the Grand Inquisitor as a spy. If he took the job, he'd be pardoned for his unnaturalness. Georges Benoît Ménard had received a summons to the Bicentenary to sign the Great Territorial Act. Ménard wanted to know who the power was above Weaver. Frère got him a false identity and sent him to London to get himself arrested.

The Bone Season[]

David's keeper is Pleione Sualocin. Paige Mahoney and Warden cross paths with David and Overseer Beltrame after Paige's first training session. David is a pink-jacket, but he is on his way to complete his second test and become a red-jacket. Overseer Beltrame comments to Warden about how loyal David is to Pleione. Warden tells David that Sheol I hasn't had an oracle since Bone Season XVI. Beltrame tells Paige and Warden that he is bringing David back to Merton to join the rest of his battalion, which is led by Pleione and Alsafi Sualocin. They are going to be hunting the Emite that bit the red-jacket in the woods. Before they leave, David sends Paige an ocular image of a place in Sheol I where he wants to meet her.

Paige meets with David and asks him about Sheol I. He tells her that the whole point of Sheol I is the brainwash them. The Rephaim want to make the humans feel inferior. They leave them in the Tower for years on end torturing and starving them in isolation so that even a place like Sheol I feels like heaven. The rankings and separation of them further enforce these ideas about inferiority. David begins smoking a roll of blue aster as he recounts for he what it was like hunting the Emite and earning his red jacket. Finally, David tells Paige about Bone Season XVIII, including the facts that it was led by a group of Rephs. He shows her the memorial hidden in the Old Church. Before she goes back inside her residence, David tries to get Paige to sleep with him as payment for his information, but she rebuffs him. As he walks away, David tells Paige that he is only pretending to be loyal.

David attends Paige's induction feast, along with many other red-jackets. He sits across from her and Paige notices how he subtly resists being subservient to Nashira. He is the first to say he is willing to learn from Paige, albeit sarcastically. Nashira then says David and Carl will be part of the group going with Paige on an external assignment to SciLo the following day.

David arrives at Magdalen to take Paige to the Guildhall for the Bicentenary Celebration. He isn't drugged like he should be. On the way to the Guildhall, David quietly tells her that the rest of the red-jackets took the purple aster concoction. He tells Paige that there is still a grain of sense left in the Archon. When Paige expresses her confusion, he tells her that the Archon has everything to with ending Scion and the Rephaim. Before leaving her, David tells Paige not to worry about him, he will get himself out.

The Mask Falling[]

Paige runs into David in L’Hôtel Garuche in Paris when she is possessing Luce Ménard Frère. He is working in the Inquisitorial family's household. David walks up to Luce and kisses her. He recognizes Paige immediately. When she asks him how he knew it was her, he replies that "it's his job to know things." David tells Paige that he has always worked for Ménard. He also says that Ménard suspects Luce is being possessed by Paige. David wants Paige to let him tell Ménard where she is. He says Ménard won't kill her because she's too valuable. Instead, she'll be imprisoned like he is, but she will be in a perfect position to spy, and when she's ready, David will help her get out. Paige expresses her doubt and mistrust. David says that now Paige knows about him and Luce, it's in his interest to keep his word. David says Paige will want to know what's going on with Ménard. It will change everything she thinks about Ménard and the Rephaim. He mentioned that he believes Luce deserves to go to the guillotine, and maybe he does too.

David tells the Paige the truth about who he is. He tells her his real name is Cadoc "Cade" Fitzours. He is a spy for the Ménard family. He engineered his own arrest and transport to Sheol I under the name David Fitton in early 2059. He spent his whole time in Sheol I observing on Ménard’s behalf. He escaped Sheol I through the assistance of Alyos Mynatt. Frère became pregnant about the time David returned to Paris. He let his affair with Frère go as far as it has because he thought if she fell in love with him, she might start seeing clairvoyants as people and might find it harder to watch them die. He was mistaken. He tells Paige that he wants to do the right thing for voyants. David reveals to Paige a truth that the Ranthen had kept from her. The Emim were Rephaim.

At the gala celebrating the success of Operation Madrigal, Paige runs into Cade again. Cade tells her that his last name, Fizours, means "son of the bear." He cryptically mentions that the meaning of the name Mahoney also has something to do with bears. Later that night, Cade attacks Paige. He brings her to the prison where Kornephoros Sheratan has been chained up. Except Cade has freed him. Paige puts the pieces of what's been going on together and comes to the conclusion that Cade is a dreamwalker and he is working for Nashira and the enemy.

Physical Description[]
